Solutions

We work with homeowners, architects, and builders to design energy efficient, healthy homes, we can guide you through the process of getting an EnergyStar™ or EarthCraft Virginia™ certified home or just build or remodel with an integrated design that considers all aspects of an efficient, healthy home.

  • Get a high R-Value insulation while preserving the integrity of your historical home
  • Learn which sustainable flooring is best for you
  • Install an affordable renewable energy system in your home this season
  • Find out how to improve your indoor air quality
  • See which lighting options are most efficient for you
  • Get your plumbing, air conditioning, heating, and electrical systems to all work together to run more efficiently (saving money)
  • Collect rainwater cost effectively
  • Design a carefree landscape to save energy dollars and conserve water

Most of these solutions begin to pay for themselves immediately. Many of these solutions are less expensive than "traditional" methods--espcially when starting from scratch.  As green building has come into the "mainstream," this is more true than ever before.

How Can We Help You?

We can spend an afternoon with you working on a specific issue, we can help you through a sustainable design process, or we can consult by the hour for the occasional question.  We also can be engaged to speak at your local event to brief people on how to live greener lives through the creation, updating, and operation of their homes.

Interested in greening your home but not sure what to do next?

A Green Home Audit includes a home visit and interview (1-2 hours depending on the size of the home), a written report, and a follow-up meeting. In the follow up meeting, the report will be summarized and recommendations will be made for a custom approach to prioritizing implementation of the items suggested in the report. Many of the options will cost little or nothing or will show immediate savings.

  • Some of the areas
  • covered in greening your home are:
  • air quality
  • thermal comfort
  • daylighting
  • electricity and propane usage
  • native gardening
  • water conservation
  • waste management.

A similar audit can also be used to review plans for a new home, renovation, or addition.
